Origin Story
My musical story starts all the back at the beginning - my father wanted a Martin guitar, but couldn’t afford it because he had a third child on the way - me. So he found a creative way to get his Martin - again, its me…
He started teaching me guitar when I was about 5 - he on his Yamaha and me on his Kay. Throughout my youth, he ran the church band, and recruited me to come play whatever he needed - guitar, bass or percussion.
By the time I got to high school, I was playing music with my friends all the time, covering Cure songs in the basement. I wanted to join the Jazz band at my school, but needed to play in the concert band to be eligible. That’s when I started trombone. By my senior year I was in the top school band on trombone, two jazz bands on guitar and bass, concert band on bass clarinet, and drummer in the pep band. I was also taking theory and in several bands with friends.
After high school, I started multi-track recording, and picking up any other instruments I could fine to use in my recording projects - a habit that continues to this day. You can find the results on the Instruments page!
When I moved to North Carolina in 1998, I started recording and producing other artists and teaching off and on. After graduating from UNC, and starting a family, I found that teaching was the most gratifying job I had ever had, and it was the ideal fit for my family life.
And so I have been at it for quite some time. I’ve done preschool music programs, middle school rock bands, jazz combo performances, classical orchestra and concert band performances, elementary school brass ensembles and recordings of all stripes and styles. And it has all been so FUN!
